Donated Prosthetic Limbs Get a Second Life
Repurposed Artificial Limbs Can Be Reused Overseas, Not US
By LIZ NEPORENT | March 12, 2014

“It was a freak show,” Rosenberger recalled. “A freak show with a purpose.”

Rosenberger, along with his wife, Gracie, has run Standing With Hope since 2002. The nonprofit organization gives prosthetic limbs a second life after a first owner has outgrown them or died.

“Heaven sent. I had been going to another prosthetic facility here in San Diego and was getting very frustrating results so much so I had given up on trying to walk. Seeing others have success I knew there had to be another way. On a whim and Kai from RGP coming to a n AIM meeting I decided to give them a try. Wow what a difference they made me realize it wasn’t me I hadn’t been given a fighting chance. I am happy to say things are looking up and hopefully I will be to a functioning […]

What to Do Before Your Trip
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, over 49 million Americans — nearly 20 percent of the population — are living with disability. And of these 49 million Americans living with a disability, 1.7 million are amputees. Considering these numbers, plus the impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), it’s no wonder that most firms involved in providing transportation and housing for travelers have made special arrangements to cater to the needs of people with disabilities.

Unfortunately, travelers with disabilities cannot afford to be nearly as carefree in making their […]

Travelers with Disabilities and Medical Conditions

Passengers with prostheses can be screened without removing them. The way screening will be conducted depends on the passenger’s level of ability and whether or not he or she voluntarily chooses to remove his or her prosthetic during screening.

The passenger should inform the Transportation Security Officer (TSO) of the existence of a prosthetic, his or her ability, and of any need for assistance before screening begins. Passengers can use TSA’s Notification Card to communicate discreetly with security officers. However, showing this card or other medical documentation will not exempt […]
